How to Choose Bore Pattern for Your Kitchen Cabinet Doors

You can order doors with pre-drilled hinge holes. We offer several standard hinge hole patterns for cabinets: Types A, B, T, and U. If you have a new cabinet, you can confidently order Type B, as it is the most common. However, if you are replacing existing doors and need to determine the type used in your kitchen, follow these instructions:

To find the hinge hole pattern, we need to know two things. First, measure the distance from the cup to the edge of the door. The cup is the large round hole on the back of the door where the hinge sits. Start by removing the cabinet door and taking off the hinge. Measure precisely from the outer edge of the cup to the outer edge of the door, as shown in the images below. This measurement is your hinge hole distance and is crucial when replacing doors or hinges. The available pre-drilled hole distances are 3 mm or 5 mm.

Second, we need to know if your hinge has dowel holes. Some hinges have 8 mm diameter dowel holes on either side of the cup, while others do not and have small screw holes instead. After measuring the distance, check if your cabinet has dowel holes.

With these two pieces of information—the hinge hole distance and whether there are dowel holes—you can accurately determine your cabinet's hinge hole pattern. A 5 mm distance with dowel holes is known as Type A. A 3 mm distance with dowel holes is called Type B. A 5 mm distance without large dowel holes is called the T-pattern. Finally, a 3 mm distance without dowel holes is known as the U-pattern.
